Can someone please tell me how you get to the hide at Montreathmont Forest? I'm I right in that you can park near Polmood? Where is the hide from there? Thanks

Riverside Nature Park, 24/11/12

Post by Barry Farquharson »

Very good day at Riverside Nature Park today. Red Breasted Merganser and Goosander fishing side by side at high tide. Male Goldeneye in the bay. Grey Wagtail by mouth of the burn. Two ringed Dippers also. 6 Waxwings flying over towards Ninewells, and a small flock of Redwings heading west. Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2 Bullfinches in trees by dump. Kestrel perched in trees near car park. Jay at Buzzard Wood. Sparrowhawk and Buzzard also seen. Highlight however was TWO Long Eared Owls showing quite well, until other birders showed up, when fleeting glimpses was all that could be managed. Got some really nice photos which will be on my flickr page later.

Managed to get to the hide yesterday at Montreathmont and it's a great little place! Never seen so many Coal Tits in one place. We topped up the feeders and then sat for a good 3 hours watching the antics. Three GSWs on the feeder and a really fat Red Squirrel came down too. The Sparrowhawk flew over the hide and scared everything away for a few seconds but the birds were not long in returning once she had gone. Also saw a few Blue Tits, Great Tits, Chaffinches, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, a male Pheasant and 3 females. A nice bonus was seeing the Jays and my first ever proper sighting of a Green Woodpecker! Will definitely be back!

Golden Eagle

Post by Grant Balfour »

I was doing a BTO Winter Thrush Survey in one of the glens at the weekend. Only came up with a few Fieldfare, but one bonus was a good view of a juvenile Golden Eagle. It landed on a rock a few hundred yards away, then flew off after being harrassed by a Buzzard.

28/11/2012, Grey Wagtail

Post by Alex Shepherd »

28/11/2012, 1430, Grey Wagtail, Balgavies.

I wouldn't normally report from Balgavies but I saw a single Grey Wagtail (confirmed photo) at the east end of the loch and thought it worth mentioning as it seemed late to be still around, I hadn't seen any for a while and thought they migrated south, but remaining in the UK.
Also 28 Redwing on railway side, 6 Goldeneye, c40 Tufted Duck, c60 Greylag, Wigeon calling, 1 Buzzard and usual Tits, Jay, GS Woodpecker at the hide.

27/11/2012, flooded field at St Vigeons Nature Trail, 26 Moor-hens and c60 Mallard. The field is a drained marsh and hopefully will revert back soon.

single Barnacle Goose in with Greylags at Kinnordy Loch at 1pm...... also several Brambling in with mixed flock along path to Swamp hide.
On a sour note, the Gullery hide was vandalised last night so the wardens are locking the gates at night from now on.
