Kinnordy and Lintrathen 14 Jan

Post by Clive McKay »

Kinnordy - male Smew, 44 Whoopers

Lintrathen - 7 (yes seven) Red Kites over in a follow my leader line heading >WSW at 12:40. This is seven times more than I've ever seen here before! They weren't hanging around, and continued til out of sight towards Alyth - cold weather movement?

P.S. I'm still looking for an Angus water feature, there must be one round here somewhere!

Camperdown Park - 11:00

At the feeders outside the ranger station were 3 Jays, 1x redwing high in the trees, very brief sightings of the nuthatch (none on the feeder though) and a single GS woodpecker flew over. Loads of Dunnock, coal, blue and great tits, robins, blackbirds also at the feeders. A single red squirrel was there too.

Westhaven 14:00 (car park only as snowing lightly)
A single grey plover and 2 turnstone were the highlights. Others seen were common gull, redshank, mallard, great black backed gull, cormorant, herring gull, oystercatchers and black headed gulls.

Kinnordy -
1 Stonechat dropping down onto ice at edge of reedbed to feed.
A Mute Swan on the ice with white leg darvic YXP.
No sign of the Smew

Lintrathen
67 Whooper Swans loafing on ice, including 3 with leg darvics - ZL9, ADS & Y5X

Kilry
2 Stonechats in field below house.

The Stonechat sightings are ominous - last time I saw them near my house was at the start of the big freeze in 2010 - and I haven't seen another one here since as they were wiped out locally by the cold weather.

One upside of the icy conditions at the moment is that the swans on the lochs often sit/stand on the ice making it possible to check for leg rings which are invisible when they're on the water. Please have a good look at any swans on the ice on your local lochs/resrs.

Cheers

20 JANUARY 2013 - Woodcock

Post by Grant Balfour »

Found 4 Woodcock in the Powmouth-Carcary area between 9:30am & 11:30am on Sunday. First that I've seen in daylight this winter.

There were also nine Waxwings near Carcary on Saturday morning when I was doing a Winter Thrushes Survey. They didn't stay long though.

24th JANUARY 2013 The Lurgies

Post by joncook »

Short-eared Owl hunting over the Slunks reedbeds this afternoon. Also a Peregrine chasing redshank without success. Still 3 Long-tailed Ducks on the Lurgies, quite approachable.

Yesterday had our first ever Yellowhammer in the garden (Barnhill, Broughty Ferry), albeit briefly. Also a Fieldfare all day, noisily defending the cotoneaster from Blackbirds, though seemed more relaxed about Greenfinches which were also taking the odd berry as a change from sunflower seeds.

Arbroath harbour - 10am
1 bar tailed godwit and curlew with oystercatchers on mini beach behind the watchtower. Also, a single redshank and black headed gulls. Not long after low tide, so there were workmen with a large digger putting in a large concrete base in the middle of the sand inside the outer harbour wall - no idea why!. Also, a robin was chasing a rock pipit along towards the football ground. A single mute swan calmly swan into the harbour from the sea.

Arbroath Esplanade (near Seaton Cliffs end) - 12:30
Tide coming in. About 10 turnstones high up the beach and a slightly larger mixed flock of ringed plover and dunlin. Loads of curlew and oystercatchers. 3 rock pipits on beach, as well as 3 lapwings. Eiders came close in with the tide (within 5 metres). A single male goosander about 20 metres out to sea. Looking back at Arbroath, a shag was on some rocks heading out to sea.
