Juv pec sand forfar loch sail club spit still, tues 0945am, srg

Date & Time: 12pm - 3.30pm, Tayock, St Cyrus and Montrose Beach

Species: Geese, Ducks, Waders and Chats

Details: Tayock 12-12.30pm, 4000 plus Pink-footed Geese, 1 Barnacle Goose, 8 Pintail, 10 Black-tailed Godwits, 300 Shelduck, 16 Dunlin, c50 Redshank and 6 Wigeon.

St Cyrus Hide 1-2.30pm ( High Tide), 10 Pale bellied Brent Geese, 28 Canada Geese, 1 Great Skua, 5 Wheatear, 2 Whinchat, 1 Kestrel, c70 Common Scoter, 7 Goosander, 450 Pink-footed Geese passing through and a Dog Fox. Brent Geese, Skua,Canada Geese all Angus side, eventually!

Montrose Beach 3.30pm, 1 Red-throated Diver, c60 Common Scoter one almost on the beach again, and 21 Sandwich Terns.

Details: Stuarts juv Pectoral Sandpiper still present on the Sailing Club Spit on Forfar Loch this PM. 2:00-2:40pm at least.
Arctic tern also present. (7 years ago to the day a Pec Sand was at Duns Dish.)

19/09/2013 Very wet Forfar Loch but thanks to SRG got my first ever Pec. Sandpiper, Arbirlot NT A92 end about 300 yards up path pair of Grey Wags and Kingfisher

The Pectoral Sandpiper was still at the Forfar Loch Sailing Club spit this afternoon (1:30-3:00pm).

Also found was an Opticron Scope on a Manfrotto tripod head with a green tripod. I sent a message to AGV but I ddin't want to leave it there until the owner turned up so I've handed it in to the lost property at Forfar Police Station.

Cheers Grant, scope etc was (is) mine! A real Homer Simspon DOH! moment, the perils of trying to do too many things at once - kids, dogs, check waders, txt news out etc. I'm owe you a pint or two!

Incidentally, it was insured, but its maybe worth other birders on group double checking your contents insurance and making sure all your optics are covered for being lost out of the house etc (sounds stupid I know, but not all policies cover this), and making sure they are covered up to cost of replacing etc.

Sorry Grant. I received my new mobile contract sim card, swapped over and it took nearly all afternoon for it to kick in with the number swap, etc.
Any texts sent during Thursday afternoon where not received. Anyway no harm done and glad Stu got his scope back!

Species: Pied Flycatcher (95%)

Details: 95% sure of a Pied Flycatcher 50 metres below the weir in Craigmill Den, two brief sightings as it went into cover. Also and most unexpected a juvenile Goosander sitting immediately above the weir and a Grey Wagtail above the wooden bridge. Also 5 Buzzards together, 12 Goldfinches, 4 Linnets, 2 Yellowhammers, and a Roe Deer in moult.

Easthaven, the 2nd year Med Gull still along beside the first wooden bridge to north, 5 Snipe at scrape near the bridge, 4 Sanderling, 6 Bar-tailed Godwits, 2 Rock Pipits, 10 Pied Wagtails, 6 Common Terns, 8 Sandwich Terns, 1 Wheatear, 5 Linnets, 2 Meadow Pipits, 3 Ringed Plover, 17 Redshank, 7 Curlew and a steady stream of Swallows going south.

Kelly Den, Elliot - 2 Dippers 200 metres and 500 metres up the burn.

Up to Glen Esk to do the first of the BTO Thrushes survey for 2013/2014. Didn't get any in my core square but did get 34 Mistle Thrush near Dalbog farm. Could be early migrants as several small groups flew in as I was observing them.

Forfar Loch this morning - no sign of the sandpiper, for shame...

I did find FOUR Magpies though, that's a record for me for this venue, think I've seen 3 together a couple of times!

Adult Hobby hunting (house martins?) around Roundyhill this afternoon. Kingfisher seen in Glamis yesterday.

I managed to see the red-breasted flycatcher at Fishtown of Usan. It's a first winter bird. It will be interesting to see if it stays around as it was on the receiving end of a lot of hassle from a robin. Also present was a yellow-browed warbler in the same patch of sycamore. Very little else about

Visited Craigmill Den, Easthaven and Hatton waterworks this morning. Only non-resident a Lesser Whitethroat at Craigmill Den which showed briefly in the hawthorns mid way along before flying off over the burn and out of sight.

Red-breasted Flycatcher flitting around in the sycamore and willow in the fenced off hen run. Got some very good views at times when it perched on exposed branches.
Yellow-browed Warbler was also present in the same area but only seen properly for about 30 seconds when it perched in the willow.

Details: Just repeat news as per Grant and others. The Red-breasted Flycatcher showing really well in the sycamores/willow at hen run.
Yellow Browed Warbler skulking also in same section of trees, showing occasionally but usually briefly.

AGV RB Flycatcher showing well at Fishtown. Curlew Sand at Rossie Spit. 9am. GMS

AGV Lesser Whitethroat & YB Warbler in sycamores at top of Castlesea Bay gully. 12:20pm. GMS

A few belated sightings from yesterday around Usan.
Tree Sparrows and Reed Buntings at the walled garden. A Kingfisher was flying around by the houses at Mains of Usan, and three Moorhens were on the pond at the bend in the road. A Great Spotted Woodpecker was in the trees opposite.
Three Barnacle Geese overflew northwards over Fishtown of Usan. Good views of the Red Breasted Flycatcher (photos here - www.flickr.com/stonefaction )A couple of Velvet Scoters flew south, as did a Red Throated Diver. Two Stock Doves in the fields by the crossroads over the railway up from the walled garden.

A Wheatear on the path near the cliffs at Arbroath. A Red Throated Diver close in offshore to the east of the harbour. A single Golden Plover flew in onto the rocks, and there were 4 Common Terns still around. An Arctic Skua went north, seen from the cliffs.

More Yellow-browed Warblers today -
3 together at East Seaton Farm Arbroath
1 in the wee wooded triangle at the top of Cliffburn Gully, Arbroath
2 together in the shelter belt to the east of Ethie Barns Farm, on the track out to Red Head
1 behind Ethie Mains house.
All vocal. (all me with Gus Guthrie). Apart from that, the only other migrant all day (except Robins, Skylarks etc) was a Willow Warbler on the south side of Arbroath.
Get out there and enjoy them while you can. SRG
