a wee bit late but on sunday at 9.00 pm I saw a barn owl perched in a tree at duntrune near Dundee,there were no leaves on the tree and the owl stood out a mile,i think this is the first one I have seen perched in a tree,its usually a bird perched on a post or a sign I see

03 mar 2016 non birding. Due to storm damage to the club house the road to Elliot crossing has been closed until further notice by the council. But if you need access you can park in the golf club car park

03 Feb 2016 have got info on ringed Black Headed gull. Ringed in Norway about 3 years ago.

Montreathmont Hide Feeding Station Topping up Rota Duty-- Recent Gales have partially blown down the 2 supporting Trunks - but the Birds still come to be fed - sightings today featured as follows-

10 BULLFINCH - 2 GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKERS - GREEN WOODPECKER - JAY - CHAFFINCH - BLUE TITS- COAL TITS - GREAT TITS- ROBIN - DUNNOCK - 2 YELLOW HAMMERS - BUZZARD - GOLDCREST-

Woodcock, Brambling and Green Woodpecker

Date & Time: 9th February 2016 - 1130hrs

2 Woodcock, 1 or maybe 2 Green Woodpecker and a Brambling in West Woods of Ethie, just past Marywell on the Arbroath to Montrose road, car parking at NO65552 45480 on east side of road past the cereal field. The paths are very muddy and the Woodcock were in the thickest difficult terrain, the Green Woodpecker was calling from trees at the east side of the woods.

Gadwall pair still on Keptie Pond, Arbroath along with a female Goosander.

Bittern, Beaver & Otter seen in a brief visit, also 30 Whooper swans present.

White-fronted Goose with Pinkfeet flock at Eassie this afternoon and a Short-eared Owl hunting near Cookston farm, Eassie at 4.30pm.

Kinnordy Loch 4.30pm

Adult Iceland Gull and a 1st winter Iceland Gull from East Hide with around 100 mixed gulls until 5pm when they all flew off.

Also 3 Otters hunting just out from the East Hide.

6 ringed gulls. 1 new, 4 seen previously and 1 incompletely read....

Yellow 2CA6 - Black Headed Gull (possibly ringed in Essex)
White J4U2 - Black Headed Gull (ringed in Norway)
Green JN69 - Black Headed Gull (ringed in Norway)
metal 6181458 - Black Headed Gull (ringed in Norway)
metal EY4.... - Black Headed Gull (ringed in UK)
metal EW85247 - Common Gull (ringed in UK)

also around 8 Goosanders, 3 Tufted Ducks, 1 Moorhen, Mallards and Herring, Black Headed and Common Gulls. Buzzard seen over wasteground off Mains Terrace also.

Species: Bittern, Kingfisher, Pintail
Details: The Bittern was still present and showing occasionally well on Wednessday 17th at around 3:30pm from BOS Hide at Montrose Basin Centre.
Barry Farquharson, Alex Shepherd & Ron Mitchell had seen it earlier in the PM also. Kingfisher also on top of fence posts.
21x Pintail present on the Basin viewed from BOS Hide today and a single Brent goose flew east, Thursday 18th February at around 11:30am.

Your Keptie BHGull was ringed on 14.06 2015 at Søndre Langåra, Frogn, Akershus & Oslo, Norway

Details: At least x18 Snow Bunting still present about 300 yards North of Victoria Park Car Park, Arbroath at 9:00am.
Favouring low cut stubble field. Can be hidden.
A sizeable flock of x500+ Wood Pigeons in fields near Auchmithie at about 3:45pm.

still 18+ Snow Buntings feeding in stubble field approx 300m along cliff path.
Very confiding birds, no need to flush them.

As well as the Arbroath Snow Buntings, three other Bunting species were present at Boghead farm. Mostly foraging on the bare field - at least six Corn Buntings with Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting and Goldfinches

Auchmithie to Red Head - Hen Harrier

Wednesday 24th February 2016 - 1100hrs

An adult Male Hen Harrier roaming between Auchmithie and Red Head, also Corn Buntings, 2 Peregrines, Buzzard, Kestrel, many Skylarks, Reed Buntings, Meadow Pipits and Linnets but no Yellowhammers.

At Red Head two flocks of Auks on the sea close in of around 200 birds which were approximately 70% Guillemot and the rest Razorbills, Fulmars also present and a passing school of Dolphins.

Harrier photo on the Photos page, but it was too far away, as usual!

Smew, Red Head at Montrose Basin

Smew still at Montrose basin halfway between Rossie Mills and the Centre on Saturday afternoon but disappeared on the rising tide.


The Red-throated Diver has been seen at Maryton Ditch at or near high tide twice recently, photo taken on 23/2/2016.
