Lesse Yellowlegs at SWT Montrose Sunday 25th

Post by HarryB »

The Lesser Yellowlegs was found again today, on the pools outside the SWT Centre, Montrose. The pools have newly flooded due to the very high tide and are not the usual pools outaide the window; they are over by the camera (on the extreme right) which allows views of the wader roost. These pools do not normally show and are a feature of the high tide today.
It may be possible to view these pools from the point behind Bridgend Garage, Montrose, which normally allows good views of the Rossie Spit.

Waxwings by Bob McCurley in Dundee Sunday 25th

Post by HarryB »

Bob reported 60 Waxwings today, at 87 Craigie Drive, Dundee, behind the bus stop.
This has also gone out as a grapevine message, but now they are here for the winter (presumably) they will not be on the grapevine again this winter, but should still be posted on this website.

Bonaparte's Gull at Fishtown of Usan Monday 26th November

Post by HarryB »

The Bonaparte's Gull was found again today (Rob and Maggie Noble-Nesbitt) at Fishtown of Usan. It favours the area between Fishtown and Boddin Ness and is often in the sea off the big field on the right of (and above) the path as you leave the car park at Fishtown of Usan.

A flock of 50+ in trees over the road at Shiell St. LNR opposite the Sand Martin banks. They didn`t stay long before flying West. Possibly the same flock as Craigie Road-I never got a Grapevine message!

Crossbills

Post by Clive McKay »

Colour-ringed Crossbills and Waxwings

Just a reminder to keep your eyes peeled for these. I had a colour-ringed Crossbill at Lintrathen last weekend - originally ringed in Fetteresso Forest Aberdeenshire on 7 Oct this year - so well worth scoping up any flocks you get close enough to.

Many Waxwings have been colour-ringed in previous years, so any sightings this year would be VERY interesting.

1 Greenland White-front still with Pink-feet at Lintrathen, + 33 Whoopers etc.

1 Long-eared Owl on road-side post in rain last night at Barry Hill. I saw it first on my way to Dundee - but only got a brief view and could only put it down as a probable Long-eared. Amazingly it was in excactly the same place when I came back 2 hours later - I was able to stop the car and get the headlights on it - and it never moved even when I drove off.

Cheers

Bonaparte's Gull

Post by Dave Adam »

Presume the slightly smaller, greyer naped gull with another 2 Black-headed Gulls is the Bonaparte's Gull. It appears much greyer when bobbing on the sea than the Black-heads. Could not see under the wings from the cliff top field. They do not seem to associate with the resident batch of Herring Gulls. Found halfway between Boddin Point and Fishtown, Usan at 11.30am. Also a pair of Stonechats, resident Buzzard & hen Sparrow Hawk with a fresh kill.

Late report on Lesser Yellowlegs at Rossie Island.

Post by HarryB »

Bird arrived again yesterday approximately mid-day. Feeding with Redshanks right under the railway viaduct as the tide pushed them up.

Access is (from the south) from Ferryden Roundabout, Montrose and an immediate left turn as you come off the roundabout, through Bridgend Garage, and under the railway viaduct. The bird is generally in the area around the boats, when it decides to arrive.
