Spotted Sandpiper at Kinnei and Male Smew at RSPB Vane Farm

Post by HarryB »

On Saturday 05/01/08 at least: A Spotted Sandpiper was on the river to the east end of Kinneil Kerse (between the Kerse and Grangemouth Refinery) on Saturday morning. Apparently it has been there for about two weeks.
Also on RSPB Vane Farm, a male and female Smew reported on 03/01/08 and the male was definitely seen on 05/01/08 from the Vane Farm observation window.
Better to be helpful, than hurtful!

My first post here. Would like to thank Bob and other members of the club (and birds) who made my first outing with you all so memorable.
Went on Saturday 05.07.08 to view the 2 Spoonbill at Kinneil Lagoons (between Grangemouth and Bo'ness). Managed excellent views of both including them flying overhead. Not sure if they are still there? Also good numbers of Bar-Tailed Godwit in Summer plumage, Red Breasted Merganser etc.
Also spent an enjoyable 2 1/2 hours watching a Cuckoo (Townhill Country Park nr Dunfermline) sitting on telegraph wires swooping down to feed in field in front of us. Special bird for me as it's my first record for Fife and to see it for so long and being able to study its behaviour was just grand.

Saturday 13th September 2008 - Greater Sand Plover

Post by Mark Caunt »

Species: Greater Sand Plover, Little Stint

There was also a Little Stint in the same ploughed field, near the path in a small pool.

Monday 15th September 4pm

Pec Sandpiper at Letham, Fife. Opposite the village there are fields which have been flooded recently. The Pec Sand was in the field on the right along with a green sandpiper. A wood sandpiper has also been reported this past weekend but wasn't there this afternoon.

The Pec is quite difficult to find and takes some scanning of the muddy area. Its been there since saturday and was said to be quite flighty, going between the fields on either side of the road.

Parking is not a problem.

Grey Phalarope on rocks at Greyhope Bay, Torry, Aberdeen yesterday. Showing well but only briefly. Disappeared behind rocks but not seen flying off. Last spotted at 1630.

Might be worth checking if you're going to be in the area today.

Happy hunting,

Wednesday 12th November 2008 - Hooded Merganser

Post by Mark Caunt »

Date & Time: Wednesday 12th November 2008
Species: Hooded Merganser
Details: The female or first winter Hooded Merganser was showing really well at Tayport Pond.
The bird has been present for about 2 weeks. Some speculation to the origin of it but with their being 2 in the country at the moment maybe it stands a chance of being accepted as a wild bird.
