Hmm, now having consulted a couple of books, neither the tree pipit and especially not the barn owl (Which we seen by daylight..) seem to be found up at Ogil.

Any ideas?

Tern raft at Montrose

Post by Neil Mitchell »

At least 9 Terns apparently occupying nest sites on the tern raft today. Reckon they're all Common's but still a couple of Arctic's showing interest. Pretty surprising as the raft went in so late on in the season.
Yesterday two Greenshanks at the Slunks and also two Ospreys.

The owl might be a short eared owl , frequently seen during the day or at least from 4pm onwwards. is there a supply of voles around?

I agree with Isabel, The short eared owls are often very light in colour and can look similar to barn owl (though not when you see the 2 together), just a lot bigger. They do cover the ground a lot faster than a barn owl, tend to nest in the glens and are very active during the day at this time of year.

Quail 4 July

Post by Clive McKay »

Heard two different calling Quails in the arable fields between Lintrathen and Kingoldrum this afternoon (birds about 2 km apart). Makes you wonder how many are out there!

Also 7 Crossbills >ESE over Alyth 2 days ago - just outside Angus, but woulds be interseting to know of any other out of habitat birds as there seems to be a bit of an invasion on at the moment.

Cheers

Quail update 4/5 July

Post by Clive McKay »

Last night had 5 calling Quail from three sites between Lintrathen and Kingoldrum, but these sites were different from those where I heard two yesterday during the day - so possibly 7 birds in the area in total. Worth keeping an ear out anywhere with arable crops and not too much woodland. I used tape playback to elicit a response from the night-time birds, but the day-tiem ones were calling intermittiently of their own accord.

Cheers

5 mile walk in an Angus glen, 6 July 08

Post by Dave Adam »

At least 4 male & 1 female Ring Ouzel showing - 1 singing and I would suggest the same numbers as previous years, at least 10 Wheatear including juveniles, c.20 Meadow Pipits, 1 Kestrel, 1 Peregrine - others calling at various sites, (1 young Curlew, 1 lovely Leveret, both doing roadrunner impressions), Golden Eagle, no Red Grouse (picked up at least 20 ticks on my jeans - wonder when red grouse will be on the red list), 1 Adder slithery/scrambling up from a water pool into grass and plenty of Common Frogs.

July 7th : SHORT-EARED OWL

Post by Tim Gulson »

Short-eared Owl at Dundee Airport, seen throughout Monday afternoon quartering the area south of the runway, often perched on the boundary fencing. Viewable from the Marmalade Pot carpark. In the past they have tended to stay for a while. Also unusual for Dundee, a Magpie has been seen on the airport over recent weeks.

Saw my first Crossbills today.

3 at Tarfside, Glen Esk.

Pretty dull plumage, does that mean they're female or is there a huge variation?
