Aug 4th - Montrose Basin (Lurgies)

Post by Grant Balfour »

Lurgies from 1900-2100, just after high tide. Light rain.

Erskine Bank had Goosander (26), Whooper Swan (1), plus Redshank, Lapwing, Shelduck & Common Sandpiper.

Up where the Millburn exits the Slunks, a Kingfisher was using the dead tree as a fishing perch. It was there for almost 10 minutes and made several dives before catching a fish. There was also a Goldeneye on the tree and four Greenshank on the mudbank at the Millburn.

Back at Old Montrose Pier - a female Red Breasted Merganser with 7 young (only a week or two old).

Kingfisher+Short-eared Owl

Post by Roy Adamson »

Watched Kingfisher from my bedroom window for about an hour this morning, catching small fish. At one point, it perched 3 feet from the window.

There are now almost daily sightings of a short-eared Owl between New Barns, Ethie Mains, Newmill, and Corbie Knowe.

Reed Warbler in the 1st roadside plantation as you head north from Fishtown going towards Mains of Usan this afternoon, though very elusive. Also a large warbler flushed there and seen for a nano-second is most likely a Barred Warbler, but it failed to re-appear in an hours search. Also Pied Fly at Mains of Usan, in the alders next to the new house thats being built next door to Inverusan house. SRG

WRYNECK at Montrose Basin, Thursday 21/08/08

Post by HarryB »

Wryneck at Montrose Basin.
Bird was found by Maggie and Rob Noble-Nesbitt at approx 14:45.
It was in the small car park as you follow the path around the eastern edge of Montrose Basin, from behind Bridgend Garage. The car park is about 300 yards along the small (single track) dead end road .The bird was first found in the car park itself, but appears to have now moved out of the car park and is using the sea wall.

I have just had a report of the first sighting of a White Tailed Eagle at Seaton of Usan yesterday (Monday). The report was reliable and was of one of the latest batch of birds. Please note this year's birds have NO wing tags but satellite trackers and metal colour rings with numeric codes.
