RE MAGPIES.

Saw one that I normally see on Wednesday (If that makes sense.)

Hopeless at describing roads, but when you are at the bottom of the turn off to the Backwater, take the road more or less ahead of you (instead of the Glen Isla road), I generally see a magpie at the first corner.

Easter outing

Post by gus guthrie »

Went for a family easter picnic up Glen Doll today, very busy. Had our picnic out past Moulzie at the wooden brig. Red Deer, Ravens, Meadow pipits galore, curlew, spawning frogs in abundance despite the snow and best of all a superb Wheatear, first one for me this year.

Roundyhill. The Brambling is still feeding in the garden after nearly a week. It has a ring on its left leg. Presumably its waiting for a tail wind!

Great White Egret

An absolute stunner, flew in at about 9.40, tried fishing in a number of places upsetting the Mute Swans at one point, before flying high to the South East at 10.30. Also possible bean goose, although only possible as they are harder to identify than certain showy fish eaters!

07/04/2010Muirfield Place Arbroath. Last 4 weeks have been watching a crows nest which has been used for the past 2 years. this year 2 Woodies moved in but got chased away by the Crows, then the woodies came back and chased the crows off. This happened a few times, in the end the crows gave up and now the woodies are happy. the female is sitting in nest. Got picture off to Bob but for some unknown reason cannot get it on to the web

April 8th - Balgavies

Post by Barry Farquharson »

Great White Egret flew in to roost on trees at Balgavies at dusk, as we headed back to the car. Fortunately we were in the open and looking in the right direction, otherwise we'd have missed it. Whoopers and Bewick Swan flew off westwards around 1830 just as we got there, so didn't quite manage a record shot. Pair of bullfinches, Reed Buntings, Long Tailed Tits all seen. At least 3 Water Rails heard. Very high pitched sounding Goose flew out with Greylags as the light was fading fast (sounded like the Bean Goose on RSPB webpage....so that may confirm the Bean Goose reported yesterday). A good evening's birding.
EDIT: Sand Martins around too.

Various Migrants & others...

Post by Grant Balfour »

Best weather so far this year meant I was out most of the day.

Balgavies:
No sign of the Egret, but a walk round the loch produced two Willow Warblers. Greylay still on the Osprey's nest with one Osprey on the dead tree nearby, where, to add insult to injury, it got mobbed by several gulls.

Glen Esk:
About 15 Sand Martins at Haughend also Meadow Pipit. A walk up the path at Tarfside had Sand Martin (6), Redwing (1, possibly 2), Lapwing (8 pairs displaying at various times), Curlew, Song Thrush.

An evening walk along the old railway line at Farnell came up with a Common Sandpiper at the Pow Burn and a solitary Swallow flying east towards the Basin.

(Forgot to mention the male Blackcap in the trees at the car park at Balgavies on Saturday morning).
