Great Grey Shrike and Lesser Whitethroat this morning on the path between Gourdon and Johnshaven.

Shrike showing really well about a mile south of Gourdon in the small bushes in amongst the old abandoned motocross circuit.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=38 ... 69825&lm=0

hope the link works, otherwise, map ref: 818 698. Easily viewed from coastal path about a mile outside Gourdon.

Really put a smile on my face finding these birds, but i wasn't out for long so am pretty sure there is heaps of stuff out there that i haven't picked up on.

Happy birding,

KevT

Hi Kevin,
Had a look down at the Motor X site late this P.M, dipped on the Lesser Whitethroat but got a brief and very clear view of the Shrike. Could not relocate him but will have another visit in the morning. Thanks for that, it was a U.K. first for me.
Regards,
John Paul.

These sightings were reported in the late afternoon by text message on the Angus Grapevine. It said Barred warbler was seen in the gardens at the top of the track in Auchmithie and the R B Shrike was at Castlesea Bay which is on the coast a bit to the south of the village.

GREAT GREY SHRIKE

Montreathmont at 1130. Continue Past the hide until you reach the bigger trees on both sides. Was sitting on top of a dead tree in a clearing. Only noticed it beacuse it was getting mobbed by a very large flock of Siskins!!

Large number of waders around the small pool in the field next to the Highland Cows on Riverside Drive, Dundee at 1610 today. Oystercatchers (maybe about 50 or so), Curlews (10) and large numbers (100+) of smaller waders (Dunlin/Redshank?). Seen from a moving bus, so no positive ID for the smaller ones. Might be worth a wee look (park in Invergowrie and walk along the path). Don't know how tolerant they will be, but I'm guessing that they are roosting round the pool at high tide.

Walked from Arbroath to Auchmithie via Seaton Den in the hope of some decent migrants this morning.
4 Common Scoters seen from cliffs but not much else offshore. A couple of Goldcrests near Seaton Den, Reed Buntings, Yellowhammer and Chaffinch also seen along the cliffs. Buzzard, Peregrine and Kestrel around too.
2 Redwings feeding in tree in the garden of the house on the right hand bend just before Auchmithie, also Tree Sparrow on same stretch of road.
Heard Barred Warbler at the top of the Gulley, but it stayed hidden while I was around, thanks in part to the group of small children that insisted on 'helping' me find some birds (they did find a dead robin at the bus shelter!). Male Blackcap, 4 Siskins, Kestrel, 2 Buzzards and a Stonechat added to the list.
Gutted to see Great Grey Shrike reported in the area after I got home.....hopefully it's still around tomorrow.

Myself and Darell headed to Craigmill Den after the ADBC outing today. Saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker on a telegraph pole (first time I've seen one here), and 2 Barnacle Geese were in with a large flock of Pink Feet overflying south. Buzzards, Linnets, Yellowhammers, Chaffinch, Goldfinch also seen here.
Small flock of Sanderling on the beach at Easthaven, with Dunlin, Redshank, Turnstone, Oystercatcher around also. A single Grey Wagtail was briefly seen with the Pied Wagtails, and a young Kittiwake was offshore. Hundreds of Starlings on the wires as well.

Some photos from today on my flickr page...

Perhaps the 11 Whooper Swans seen at 1pm at Broughty Ferry today were amongst the 17 I saw leaving Montrose Basin and flying south west at midday? Also a Kinfisher perching in the middle of the basin and fishing - great views from the Lurgies.
