20th OCTOBER 2010 unusual Wigeon, Lintrathen

Post by joncook »

Bob & I found an unusual drake Wigeon at Lintrathen old hide today with a green area above and behind the eye. The jury seems to be out as to whether such birds are American/Eurasian hybrids, natural variation amongst Eurasian Wigeon, or a trick of the light.

Will post a picture in the Photographs section.
Jon

ps 21/10/10 17:30 - Have just substituted a larger image as was hard to see the green previously.

Sat, 23 October - Carnoustie beach - a dipper flying off the sea and heading inland eastwards was a bit unexpected.

Barn Owl

Post by Grant Balfour »

22/10/2010
Barn Owl (1) seen at Kinnaird Park at 21:20. First time I've seen one here in eight years.

I've also heard that a Barn Owl can sometimes be seen at the industrial estate on the west side of Brechin(NO585601), although I've yet to see this one myself.

There are a few in the Brechin area,I've seen them at:- bridge of dun, sewage works on montrose road, near the brechin squash club and along the A90 .
Kinnaird is a great birding place,I've been fishing on the South Esk all summer and have seen a lot of wildlife, although the ferral ferret wasn't a welcome sight.

Gray [Red] Phalarope swiming off Bervie shore @ 3.30pm. Whent home to get the camera & it was still there when we left at 4.30pm.
Location is 1/2 mile from Bervie Bay car park & just past the land slip. It was using the rocks & pools close to shore for shelter to feed.

Seen about 40+ Waxwings at the car park at Den of Alyth today about 1pm. Only a few were visible flying round above our heads and landing in nearby trees but a Sparrowhawk went right through them and they all rose into a large flock and flew away.
