Not much variety today, but a record count of 843 Siskins was very early in the autumn for this species, and Swallows were passing through at 1,000/hr when I left at 9:15. Three Wheatears on beach. Full details at http://trektellen.org/trektelling.asp?t ... m=20110904

Re: SEPTEMBER 2011 ANGUS BIRD SIGHTINGS
In response to Clive's post perhaps I should have mentioned that Sunday morning was very good for VisMig over Montrose at the eastern edge of the Basin and at Scurdines/Ferryden. Primarily meadow pipits but also siskin, redpoll and skylark.
Spoonbill still at Montrose Basin yesterday and Little Stint at Easthaven at ca 1800. I clocked up 109 species in the Montrose-Forfar-Arbroath triangle yesterday - you can tell the family's away.........

Re: SEPTEMBER 2011 ANGUS BIRD SIGHTINGS
Clive, what time did you see the Sisken? I am interested, as I am out with the dogs every morning, 0630hrs - 0715 around Arbroath Cliffs. This week there has been large numbers of Meadow Pipit migrating, but only heard one Sisken.

I spent many hrs yesterday and today seawatching off Usan. Not huge movements, mainly young gannets (this yrs and other imms) but rewarded with a Balearic shearwater sth yesterday, a sooty norrth and then south (almost certain the sam eindiv) and two manxies the same. At least 5 Bonxies and 25 Arctic skuas - some passing, some locally based.

East Haven Thurs 8 Sep
Sorry for late posting.
Another good day, with a large movement of Mipits - at least 5,700, and another 900 Siskins and 45 Redpolls. I'd bevery interested to hear of any records of both these species this autumn as something quite exceptional is going on with the Siskins, and the same may follow with Repolls. Full details at http://trektellen.org/trektelling.asp?t ... 10908&sc=0
Also 10-15 White Wags on the beach (no Pieds) and 15 Wheatears. Tried hard for a passing raptor in the late morning without success.
Cheers

Re: SEPTEMBER 2011 ANGUS BIRD SIGHTINGS
quick visit into Kinnordy Loch on my way home produced an unexpected surprise..a Kingfisher.
Also Long-tailed tits, Goldcrests, Bullfinches and Siskins all outside the gullery hide.
18 Gadwall, 4 Shoveller and 40+ Wigeon were also present and a very fleeting look at a Water Rail.
Qyuite a lot of scrub being removed from among the reedbeds as well.

Montreathmont Crossbills
Wednesday 21st 11.30hrs Got great close up views of a flock of Crossbill (numbering 30 -40) in the trees on west side of the hide track about 100 metres from the Forfar Road. Males females and juveniles were visible in the treetops but gradually descended to the lower branches allowing prolonged viewing at short range. They were accompanied by a mixed flock of Tits and Siskin.
