Took a wee walk around some of the local area in Dundee around lunchtime to see if I could find anything interesting. First stop was Caird Park where at least 1, possibly 2, Great Spotted Woodpecker were seen at the ponds. A Grey Heron flew over eastwards from the direction of the ponds as I passed the Castle. A mixed flock of tits (Blue, Great, Coal and Long tailed) and a couple of Goldcrests were in the trees by the road up between the stadium and the golf course. Walked up Mains Loan where a flock of 30 or so Redwings flew over low eastwards towards the wasteground, and then I walked along Lammerton Terrace. At the junction with Castle Terrace a Collared Dove made me stop and as I watched it a Magpie landed in the tree next to it, before flying onto the roof of the adjacent house. It turned out that there were actually 2 of them - the first time I've seen them so close to home. From there I headed to Stobsmuir ponds where around 6 Tufted Ducks were with the Mute Swans, Black Headed Gulls and a couple of Common Gulls. Down into Baxter Park where there was a bit too much activity for there to be many birds around and then home. Not a bad wee walk with the Magpies the biggest surprise. Definitely an increase in their numbers in Dundee this year.

In a 3 hr seawatch a few kittiwakes, 3 gannets, a handful of guillemots and the only skua around being the immature long-tailed skua still present. Received this email and am posting it to keep your eyes peeled. Cannot confirm if its accurate or a SE Owl mistaken as it may have been a non birder sighting....
I was up on the hills above Glenisla yesterday (all of the 6 Munros in 5 hours - not bad for November), and on the way down, about a mile up the small glen above Tulchan Lodge, at about 4.30pm, I put up a female (or young or both) snowy owl. Not sure which of us was the more surprised. Just thought others might be interested, as long as they are responsible.

Female Redstart

Post by stevendoig »

Having a fag up the close between my shop (Doig's) and Goves Bargain store in Montrose High street at 1230. To my surprise and bemusement what could only be** a female redstart landed on the guttering and remained in full view for thirty seconds.

By far my best 'close sighting'!!

** Unless someone has a better idea as to what it could be!!

20th NOVEMBER 2011 Forfar Loch

Post by joncook »

A Long-tailed Duck between Leisure Centre and Yacht Club this afternoon, unusual inland.
Big Starling pre-roost gathering, 500-1000 birds over the loch from 16.00 to 16.15 when they dived into the reeds by the viewing platform. Thankfully they managed fine without Bill Oddie. Still chattering away at 16.30 despite an attack by a Sparrowhawk.
