Humpback whales

Post by gus guthrie »

Maybe a bit out of local range..but 2 Humpback Whales have been seen feeding over the last couple of days offshore at Balmadies Country Park, just north of Aberdeen. Worth keeping a look out down here as well for these great creatures.

Otters being seen on a regular basis at Kinnordy Loch, had a female this morning and shortly after 3 of last years juvenilles were capering between the Gullery & East hides.
The gulls are good indicators if the Otters are around as they tend to gather together and mob them.

Seen an otter swimming up the swollen moss burn near kinnordy farm, presumably one of the young from kinnordy moving off to establish its own territory.

26 July - Lunan - Dolphins & Minke

Post by Grant Balfour »

26 July 2012
At the Lunan Bay hide for a couple of hours in the morning. There were around 11 Bottlenose Dolphins in the bay, some of them quite close in. Also got a couple of sightings of a Minke Whale although this was very far out & I only saw it by chance as I was scanning the area for Shearwaters.

24/10/2102, 1300, Black Darter Dragonfly, Kinnordy at the Lily Pond.

I'm confident that this is a Black Darter which I was surprised to see so late in the year, it
was one of four sitting on the tree stumps to the north of the Lily Pond at Kinnordy.

Very nice photograph, male Black Darters tend to be hyperactive on anything other than dull and cool days so its not often you see good clear images of them in bright sunlight.

Also a good find, its worth recording that sighting if you have not already done so - as far as I know the last record for that 10km square (NO35) was in 2007.

The first half of this year was so cold, dull and wet that I did not see adult forms of dragonflies/damselflies at some of the breeding sites in Angus until the second week in August which is "normally" the halfway point of the season. That may be part of the reason there were still some individuals of the hardier species were still around last week. Some of them in very good condition like the one in your photo, usually the few that are left by mid-October have wings with ragged edges and chunks missing and discolouration on the body.

Yesterday at Glamis Castle I saw what I think was a Mink in the Dean Water beside the bridge. It was swimming away from me but it was a very dark black colour and not that big. Also saw a couple of Red Squirrels and unfortunately a Grey Squirrel too.

17/11/2012, Stoat Hunting

Post by Alex Shepherd »

I should have posted this at the time, but better late than never. While circling round at the Lurgies at Montrose Basin to avoid scaring some birds I caught this Stoat chasing a rabbit which as they often do, it stopped and was attacked by the stoat. The stoat had a go at it's neck then retreated before going back a few times to make the kill. Just as I took the second of these photos a dog walker and large dog scared the stoat away from it's kill leaving a mortally wounded rabbit.
