6/12/2012, Barn Owl and Cormorants

Post by Alex Shepherd »

6/12/2012, 1830, Barn Owl, NO 67250 51010 start of new road section between Inverkeilor and Lunan.

Various dates throughout November/December, Cormorants, most seen 3, at Keptie Pond, Arbroath. During summer I'd seen shoals of what I think may be roach or small perch and the Cormorants are very active hunting, usually late afternoon.

7th @ 1505 visit to Baxter Park - small mixed flock of green & gold finches, blue tits, great tits and then what I'd gone for in top of Sycamore next to Cotoneaster tree in north west corner of the park (nr Morgan Academy) c. 140 waxwings - superb and many thanks to those who've reported over the last few days. Good sightings and great to watch them enjoying the berries and listen to their chattering. Also viewed a very vocal treecreeper. And then a flock of thrushes flew over mistle/fieldfare.

At Dundee Eastern Cemetery 13:30 - 14:30 (must have been there just before Bob...)

Waxwing: Still 400+ but very flighty and didn't settle for long anywhere (one photo shows c350 in one tree and there were still other small flocks flying around).
Mistle Thrush (8), Fieldfare, Song Thrush all still around.
One female Sparrowhawk was flying around and set up the Waxwings a couple of times.

Popped back to see the waxwings this morning (9.45am) - c.70 in the cemetery (nr Baxter Park) with c.20 fieldfares and some mistle thrushes. Interesting to see how the waxwings and thrushes seem to stick together, but then it seems the waxwings benefit from the mistle thrushes alarm call.

A party of Long Tailed Tits feeding in the trees behind the Caird Hall in Dundee City Centre around 1030. A single male Goldeneye offshore behind Discovery. A large flock of around 200+ Waxwings in the area around the bottom of Roseangle/railway line/Barnetts garage car park. Feeding on berries by railway line and also feeding on small berry bushes by the path down onto Riverside Drive. Really close views through the fence though there were not too many berries left there when I headed for home. Photos on my flickr page.
