Lurgies - 14 Aug (~9am)

2 Kingfishers flew past, 204 Canade geese, ~10 greylags, lapwing, redshank, greenshanks, common sandpiper, grey herons and the usual gulls. Also saw a yellowhammer chasing a linnet.

Balgavies Loch - ~2pm
Loads of greylag geese, 2 pochard mixing with the tufted ducks. Plenty of juvenile moorhens on the lilypads (one looked very light brown - orange bill with black ring near tip), grey herons, 3 young osprey flying about and landing in the trees and on a rock in the middle of the loch. Had 5 buzzards with a different osprey circling high in the sky to the north of the loch. One pair of swans with 4 large cygnets, coots, a few blue and great tits too. A pair of jays flew across the hide too.

A few days in Angus

Post by colinlamond »

Here are some reports from last week when I spent a few days in Angus with my parents in Kirriemuir.
I visited Kinnordy Loch on Thursday morning 22nd August.
On the loch there were four goosander, teal, widgeon, mallard, tufted and gadwall ducks.
The male marsh harrier was hunting over the loch and buzzard was over some nearby farmland.
Between the hides there were sedge warbler, willow warbler, two spotted flycatcher, coal tit, great tit, tree creeper, goldcrest and great spotted woodpecker. I saw a couple of red squirrels and a brown hare on the farmland.
Water rails called from the reeds.
Lots of snipe and lapwing were flying around.
There were swallows, sand and house martins.
I also found nodding bur marigold, lesser twayblade and greater spearwort.

I returned on Friday 23rd August, the next morning, and there were two ospreys, two marsh harriers and a peregrine was perched in a large pine tree. A golden plover flew over.

We walked Thursday 22nd August at the backwater dam.
Buzzards were very common. We also saw Osprey on several occasions; there were at least two birds here.
Meadow pipits were very common. We found two spotted flycatcher, redpolls and a few blue tits, great tits and coal tits. There were lots of goldcrest in the conifer trees.
We flushed a green woodpecker.
There were lots of small tortoiseshell butterflies, several peacocks and red admirals.

On Friday 23rd August we walked in a glen to the north of Kirriemuir. There were lots of dippers on the river and many meadow pipits. We sat for lunch and a golden eagle flew by. We saw another eagle lower down the glen. A few kestrels were hunting. We found two spotted flycatcher by the edge of spruce plantation.
On the mountains we saw a large heard of red deer, and we also found some roe deer.
A butterfly flew past which I think was one of the pearl bordered fritillaries.

On Friday 23rd August, I walked on a small area of heath to the west of Kirriemuir. I found here two Ospreys sitting in a tree. I also flushed a short eared owl, which allowed me to approach and photograph it.

I returned the next day with my parents for a short walk here. We found linnets, meadow pipits, yellowhammer, whitethroat, willow warbler and redpolls. The two ospreys were still there. We saw three sparrowhawks flying over the heath. A whimbrel flew over.
We found two redstarts in a bush.
On Sunday 25th August we walked in Glen Prosen. We found lots of wheatears and meadow pipits. We saw lots of red grouse. The only raptors were a two kestrels and one buzzard.

Hi Colin, I'd say your Owl was a Long-eared, rather than a Short-eared.
