Curlew Sandpiper - Craigmill Beach

Post by Alex Shepherd »

Date & Time: Monday 1st September 2014 - 1420 hrs

Species: Curlew Sandpiper, Kingfisher and Wheatear

Details: Juvenile Curlew Sandpiper with Dunlin 100 metres to south of the Craigmill Burn, unfortunately being moved around by walkers. Kingfisher just below the railway bridge and 2 Wheatears on the rocks.

Easthaven, Barry's Yellow Wagtail find still there at 1625 feeding on the stranded seaweed 200 metres north of the car park, also scared off by dog walkers and flew south probably past the sandy bay in front of the car park. Two short clips here, the Wagtail is at 75% speed to make it easier to view. https://www.youtube.com/user/eckshepherd/videos

Managed to refind the Roseate Tern (adult plus also a possible juvenile) and also a juvenile Mediterranean Gull at Arbroath today. Initially the RT was near the western end of the esplanade area on rocks, but showed up later on the rocks by the cliffs (FAO Neil Black & Mickey Mellon, it WAS the bird perched on the small rock). A Peregrine had a go at the Terns as they perched on the rocks here resulting in them all deserting the area and heading off somewhere. A few Golden Plover on the rocks near the Roseate Tern early on, a Guillemot on the lower cliffs at Seaton Cliffs and 2 Common Sandpipers by the harbour wall/burn outflow.

A few photos of the Roseate Tern on my facebook page.

Little Egrets

Post by Gordon Anderson »

On Sunday night I noted that one of the Little Egrets was colour ringed. Red on Right Yellow on left. On the Yellow ring the letter "A" was visible. There were around 50 Grey Herons lining the Esk Channel. 8 Little Grebes, four Greenshanks, one Ruff.
