Ring Ouzel and Green Woodpecker

Post by Alex Shepherd »

Tuesday 19th April 2016 at Lochlee, 5 Ring Ouzel, 3 males disputing territories and 1 pair, also 2 Common Sandpipers, Swallows, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush and Wheatear.

Dalbrack Bridge, Glenesk, 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Dippers, one Dipper chasing the Sandpipers away.

Wednesday 20th April in the Eastern Cemetery, Arbroath 1 Green Woodpecker heard then traced, flew to trees at the top of St Vigeans Brae. I'd think a first for Arbroath?

Montrose - 22nd April

Walk from Curlie Pond out to North Esk river and back via golf course and old airfield.

Plenty of skylarks and meadow pipits around. Also saw linnets, reed buntings, willow warblers and yellowhammers. Curlie held only mute swans, coot, moorhen, herring gulls and reed buntings in the reed bed. At NorthEsk, 4 shelduck in a pool on the south side of the river, pied wagtail and linnet sat on shoreline rocks of the island. On the way back, a single male wheatear in the old airfield field.

Common Sandpiper - Keptie Pond Arbroath

Post by Alex Shepherd »

Reckoned to be the first sighting of a Common Sandpiper at Keptie Pond, Arbroath today 23/4/2016. Also male Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Swallows, Sand Martins and also new, nesting Greylags. Still one remaining Purple Sandpiper on the breakwater and a Wheatear on the beach at Inchcape Park, Arbroath, seven Purple Sandpipers at Scurdie Ness earlier this week.

Ringed Grouse: I asked a ringer about a ringed Red Grouse and was told that Gamekeepers ring birds when worming young birds at their nests, perhaps the Black Grouse are the same? Wonder if they need a licence?

Hanging about in the close between my shop (Doig's) and 'Chop' the barbers for the last two days - (Montrose High Street)

Very flighty.

Kinnordy Loch - 29 Apr (19:00 to 20:30)

Peregrine flew over, osprey eating, then collecting 'nesting / roosting' material. 1 each of dunlin, common sandpiper and snipe on bogbean. Also, barn owl came out for a fly away. Tufties, shoveller, teal, wigeon, lapwings, greylag geese, mute swans, mallards, moorhens swimming around. Plenty of sand martins flying around and white/pied wagtails (no yellow). 2 meadow pipits on the bogbean and reed buntings in the reeds too. Sedge warblers and water rail heard.

Also had the beaver swimming across the back of the loch (from the East Hide) and 3 deer crossed right in front of the Gullery Hide and then proceeded to stay on the open reeds, even spending time sat down.
