American Wigeon and Bramblings

Post by Alex Shepherd »

The American Wigeon was showing well from the old hide at Lintrathen, it adopts a Coot and follows it and feeds on dislodged weed when the Coot surfaces, some of Eurasian Wigeon do the same, if the Coot stops they adopt a new Coot. Also, Pochard, Canada and Greylag Geese, Teal, Tufties, Goldeneye, Mistle Thrush, Bullfinches, two Crossbills, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Whoopers.

East of the new hide towards the back of the sawmill the passerine flock now numbers at least 400 birds and many are Bramblings, a photo taken for ID had 93 birds in it and all but 4 were Bramblings. Late afternoon the flock was flushed from the lochside trees by a Merlin.

Merlin

Post by Alex Shepherd »

A Merlin near the Wigeon Hide, Montrose Basin, 10/12/2016 around 1230.
40 Fieldfares on the old railway embankment on the way to the hides.
No birds at all at the usual Twite site, the track junction.
A large number of mixed songbird species calling in the reedbeds.

3 Grey Partridges in the large stubble field at Mains of Usan and a flock of 300-400 Starlings towards Scurdie Ness.
Another raptor, most likely a Sparrowhawk near Fishtown of Usan.

2 Green Sandpipers at Monikie

Post by Alex Shepherd »

Monday December 12th 2016 - 1135 and 1300
Monikie
Green Sandpiper

Two Green Sandpipers just to the east of the fishermen's pier on the Island Pond today at 1135 and 1300, they are wary and fly off when any walker goes past. The water level is down so there is ample "beach" for them to feed on if they can put up with disturbance. Probably best viewed from the elevated path where the ducks get fed on the track to Denfind.

Video of one bird taken into the shadows here, https://youtu.be/2ctgHJrdrs8 a second video from a country mile away showed both birds.

Heard what I think was a Tristis/Abietinus Chiffchaff today, it was calling constantly from the trees by the carpark at Crombie Country Park. Didn't get any detail on it! as it flitted around in the company of a small group of Goldcrests.
2 Ravens are also now a daily occurrence.

Had a day birdwatching in Angus whilst visiting relatives. We walk along the beach at Monifieth near to Balmossie. There were lots of water here, much more than we are accustomed to in Dorset. Lots of Oyestercatcher, turnstone, dunlin, ringed plover, redshank and bar-tailed godwits. There were good numbers of wigeon, a couple of goosanders in the burn and a few mallard ducks. There were a couple of pink footed geese to. On the sea most of the ducks were eider, with a few goldeneye and red-breasted merganser although there may have been some other species there but they were too far out. Spotted a couple of red-throated diver and one guillemot. At Kinnordy Loch we found quite a few whooper swans. Ducks there were wigeon, gadwall, teal and mallard. We twice saw the bittern flying over the reeds.

Yesterday we walked along the beach at Lunan Bay. There were several large rafts of scoter on the sea. I think they were common and velvet. There were also quite a lot of long-tailed ducks and my wife enjoyed the males only having seen the drab birds we get down south. Amongst one of scoter rafts I counted at least 12 red-throated divers.
Along the cliffs there were fulmars.
I heard a yellowhammer from the car park.
We found a grey wagtail by the stream coming out onto the beach.
There was also a buzzard flying along the cliff top which was chased off by jackdaws and rooks.
In the afternoon, we went up the Kirriemuir hill and found 14 Bohemian Waxwings feeding on some yellow berries in a garden in Mart Lane,

Yesterday afternoon we drove up to the Backwater Reservoir. There were few birds around. Near to the car park we found a coal tit, gold rest, wren, robin and a couple of bull-finches. As we walked along the side of the reservoir a redpoll flew over and three ravens. A heron was on the opposite bank. We could see a lot of duck congregated at the top end of the reservoir. Unfortunately, we were over taken by a couple of walkers who decided to leave the path and walk the edge of the reservoir putting the ducks to flight. On group was teal, and i found a lone tufted and female goldeneye. Not sure of the others as they flew off. We found a buzzard on our walk back and a couple of cormorants.
We stopped off at Lintrathen on the drive back to look for the rare ducks recently seen there. I scanned the large wigeon flocks but could not find the American Wigeon. Amongst the large group of teal I found an American Green-winged Teal, the one with the white vertical stripe down the side. There were also goldeneyes, coot and a few whooper swans. Near the hide I found around 6 bramblings. I gave up on the American Wigeon in the failing light. A group of Canada Geese came in just as Ieft.
